Description
Wartime on the Underground To Commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the first underground route from Paddington to Farringdon in 1863, our resident artist has painted “Wartime on the Underground” depicting a scene at Trafalgar Square at the height of the blitz. Many Londoners took refuge on the platforms deep below the streets for safety, as can be seen in this delightful but poignant scene. The WRVS are serving some mugs of tea whilst members of our armed force wait for the incoming tube a newish London Underground 1938 stock that ran for the last time in 2012. A small boy shows his model Spitfire to an RAF Officer, while others read a book or just sleep the night away.
