The call of Rag n’ Bone! was once a familiar cry in British towns and villages, accompanied by the clip clop of hooves.
It meant an opportunity for householders to dispose of worn out clothes and just about anything else they wanted rid of. One chap I talked to remembered as a lad having a summer holiday job on such a round. He told me his rag & bone man carried a barrel of goldfish on the cart. These were given in water filled plastic bags as payment to children who offered anything of value.
