Barry Scrapyard Sleeping Giants Barry in South Wales will always be famous because of it’s scrapyard of railway locomotives and rolling stock. For me, visiting this wonderful place in 1964 was a truly exiting moment, for where else would you find 200 steam locomotives all together in one place? Robin Pinnock has captured this great period at Barry Scrapyard with immence accuracy, including the rows of engines at this time. Ex Southern railway WC/BB Class locomotive 34072 “Manston” is waiting her fate that like 212 further engines would never take place. Manston now resides in restored condition on the Swanage Railway in Dorset and many others are to be found on preserved lines all over the UK. All this became possible owing to the Scrapyard proprietor the late Dai Woodham who although running a business, became involved with all those who’s aim was to preserve the engines, we hope that through this painting, he and his scrapyard will never be forgotten.
